Scrap valuable items from DVD/CD/DVD-R optical drive

What you can do with faulty DVD/CD/DVD-RW optical drive?

If you have an old computer think twice before throwing or give it away to the scrap metal collectors for free. The DVD/CD/DVD-RW is one example of computer peripheral device consist of some useful components. Depending on what you want to make but most people make use of it as parts of in hobbies components or science/school experiments. For example:

1. Laser Diode - Use to make homemade laser beam or as replacement of laser pointers other creative people can do better than this. In most modern DVD/CD/DVD-RW there are at least 2 laser diode and the focus lens. Where the focus lens can be used to make close range magnifying lens for mobile phone camera. Some creative individual making a great mobile phone camera microscope using it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpMTkr_aiYU). This save money buying a microscope that may cost around USD $100 to USD $1000

2. DC motors - Can be used to make motors for electrical experiments or hobby toys. There are at least 2 or 3 motors inside the drives and that save more than $10 bucks to buy such motors from eBay. Or perhaps it can be resell for money.

3. Neodymium Magnets - This is a strong rare earth magnets located near the focus lens. It's a tiny rectangle shape but the pulling force is quite strong. Neodymium magnet is one of the most demand magnets because of it powerful pulling force.
