What is the best printer brand/model for CISS - Canon Pixma

Even though there are many how to demonstration to install continuous ink supply system (CISS) on any kind of printers brands and model on the internet. Actually the fact is not all will work 100% as expected due to some complicated circumstances from the printers. Example of complication issue.

1. Epson printers usually require chip re-setters. This is because Epson uses technology that detect the ink level and automatically prevent it from printing when the ink level is empty in its cartridge. If using the CISS will not increase the ink cartridge level because it directly flow from the ink tank reservoir, so the Epson require chip re-setter to prevent the printer from detecting the cartridge ink is low. And yet again not all chip re-setters will work perfectly either.

2. Printer's built structure - Due to complicated internal structure built of the printer making it difficult to place the CISS host piping to reach the cartridge. As a result the CISS ink will not flow smoothly from the ink tank reservoir to the cartridge. This is apply to printers like HP, Epson, Canon (Office printers), etc.

3. Cartridge built and ink - Not all cartridge is suitable to be modified for use in CISS and some ink like HP printers will solidified when mix with CISS ink. This making it difficult for the ink to flow out of the cartridge when it dry at the cartridge print head nozzle.

4. Other unknown complication also may contribute to the failure to install the CISS to printers.

So what is the best printers that work good with Continuous Supply Ink System (CISS)?

I have seen these in most of IT Stores and personally i have purchased some of these printers as well for my clients. These are the printer models that you can install CISS easily without so much complication involve.

Canon PIXMA MP145, MP150, MP198, MP258, MP250, MP238, MP198.

Despite of the different model name these Canon PIXMA printers are identical in its structural built and the cartridge can be easily modified even by novice home users. The cartridge ink also has no complication with the CISS ink and will not solidified if mix together. All these traits making these Canon printers sold the most in local IT store even until today and in fact sometimes out of stocks.

    1. Yes it can be but not the best for CISS because the internal structural built is a little bit difficult to place the host piping to connect with the cartridge.

I purchased one for my client and it is the best ever. The CISS is built in but its either made in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia who has this model.

The photocopy and scanning thing does not disturb the printing process at all. Whoever said it, is not true.

    1. I would suggest you to buy the factory manufactured CISS EPSON L200 or L210. I have this model that i am using now, the printing quality is superb. The photo printing quality is way better than those printed by the shop. The good thing is that you don't have to worry that the ink will not flow anymore, because it is well built with tested experiment that it will works. No more airflow blocked. The ink is originally supply by EPSON itself.

However this model is only available in south east asia and it is modified by the Vietnam company by EPSON approval and it is being sold in across south east asia like the Philipines, Thailand, Indonesia, etc.

The price is not so expensive around USD $100++
read here for more info about it and i will post a video soon on youtube how good the photo printing is by this printer

    2. I have owned two of these CISS Epsons (L355, for $249, and the new ET-2550, for $299). Out of the two, the earlier model worked better than the newest. I will not buy another one and I'm returning to Canon with a separate CISS. I have been inking my cartridges since the late 1980s and was on the experimental edge of doing this with a bunch of geeky college students before kits were ever sold. We used syringes to draw ink out of a cheap mismatched source and force it into the HP cartridge. It worked for the most part, then others began offering bulk ink and kits, which made the work easier and better matched.
in the mid-late '90s, printer manufacturers got wise to this and began including chips on cartridges to prevent it. China met the demand for resetters and glue on chips to defeat this. CISS came along after that, but a new problem entered when finer nozzles with wider nozzle patterns came out, because with the finer/extra nozzles, you get a greater chance of clogging. That is where the Epson solution for CISS is still insufficient. When (not if, because you will) you get a clogged nozzle, you will find yourself cleaning, by recommendation of Epson, several times before going to the power flush. Two problems exist with this. First, Epson (in contrast to Canon) makes you clean all four colors every time when only one color has a clogged nozzle. What this does is fill the cleaning reservoir each time you clean it with three colors that did not need to be cleaned. Then, if it still did not work, you get to perform a power flush, which really fills the reservoir. That is how my first Epson L355 died (if I have to send it to Espon for service, then forget it, I'll buy a new one). Second, Epson, knew that power flushes would be necessary or they would not have included it on the maintenance options, but they did not provide a self-service way to clean, replace, or reset the reservoir. Since they knew more ink would flow to the reservoir, then they should have provided a self-servicing way for the end user to maintain it without shipping the printer to Epson. However, there is a workaround on this on YouTube, but I'm not ready to drill holes in the back of a new printer. Epson angers me because they should have thought of this instead of some hack way to out smart their machines, therefore, I'm done with Epson and going back to Canon. I found no advantage to the two Epson CISS printers as verses attaching a third party CISS to a Canon and with my Canon CISS, I had fewer clogging issues (Nano inks) and more consistent printing. FYI, the L355 lasted less than a year with approx 10,000 printed pages. It should have done better than that. The new Espon, ET-2550, had clogged nozzles on the first and second print jobs, so I am taking it back for a refund today and calling it defective. They can make a boat anchor out of it for all I care. I'll buy a Canon for 1/4 the price.

  10. Sir, first of all I honestly admire your helping attitude, especially in printer category. There are very few people like you!

Now straight to point....I currently own a HP Deskjet 2050 J510a, 2 yrs old. As I see after sometimes of refilling the cartridge(no CISS), the photo deteriorates...like white dots and some horizontal marks which make the photo/colour printing ugly!(Why?)
    I am from Assam, India...

Now I want to buy a new Inkjet printer mainly because of photo and colour prints. So, which printer brand or model should I go for. I searched for canon Pixma 287. What's better - canon or Epson?

One more thing, suppose I install CISS on Pixma 287 cartridge which contain Pigment based ink. If I refill the CISS with Dye based(because it's better) ink, will there be any problem like clogging or no issues ar all? what do you think. Please answer, I am helpless.

    1. Hi Washim, to answer your questions and trouble

      1. From experience HP printer simply one of the most troublesome to installed with CISS because of the sponge cartridge. I have dumped mine to the garbage

      2. The photo deteriorate because the ink is too weak/loose to hold onto the photo paper. Since photo paper has a slippery surface and the CISS ink is smudgy type therefore it deteriorate along the way during printing as the cartridge print head slide on the paper.

      3. If the ugliness is due to incomplete color that is because of the sponge or due to the clogging preventing the ink to flow from the reservoir tank to the cartridge

      3. If you would to buy i recommend epson L100 to L200 series see this as proof http://howtodosteps.blogspot.com/2013/11/epson-l200-ciss-printer-continuous-ink.html. I have been using almost a year now no clog and ink don't smudge as much as china ink

      3. Mixing pigment based and dye based ink may cause wrong combination of chemical reaction that harden the ink as a result the cartridge internal maybe solidified not to say the host.

      1. The cartridge electronic board might be dirty due to the CISS or it is not properly plugged in. Or worst faulty.

      2. I recommed EPSON L200 series this comes with factory made CISS and the ink is higher quality compare to DIY CISS because the ink is supplied by EPSON itself the printing quality is superb and your problem of clogging, not working or errors are pretty much eliminated. Refer to this post

    1. I think it's fine but if you have less hassle of the maintenance i would recommend buying the EPSON L200 and all other L series like this http://howtodosteps.blogspot.com/2013/11/epson-l200-ciss-printer-continuous-ink.html....comes with built-in CSS.

The problem with self-modification and shop customized is the ink flow due to weather conditions...hot/cold temperature eventually stop the ink from flowing especially when you are not using it quite often. And the first few times maintenance usually is okay but when it gets too often you will get tired of it and frustrated.

Although it is good but the EPSON L series comes with CISS is much better. I take said this from experience.

    1. I would definitely recommend the EPSON L210 - it has all the best characteristic compare to the canon. First you can purchase the EPSON L210 that is already modified with CISS tank as in here EPSON L1200 and the most important thing about it is the ink way much superior than the normal CISS ink. Also you will have less hassle to maintain the printer - because self modified CISS tend to have many disadvantages and frequent maintenance will eventually create frustration.

Using CISS try to find simpler printer with quite a hollow space internally which allow the host pipe to be installed without problem.

    1. It looks there are from the same family model...and by the look of the body built it can be tough for CISS especially with the body look very compact...CISS host pipe require a room for the host to go through and freely moving back and forth during printing...

Look for a printer that have internal body built that looking spacious...easy to setup the host from the ink tank reservoir and also allow the host to stretch freely back and forth during printing. That's why the pixma MP145 family model are easier for CISS because it's internal built quite spacious and simple..

    1. Hi pradeep the body built of the HP 1010 looks good for CISS but i from my experience the HP ink cartridge is the most troublesome of all. In the end you will get frustrated having install CISS on it. The reason is because HP cartridge using sponge to store the ink and sometimes the sponge don't absorb the ink easily especially when it mix up with other ink...that's the reason why HP printers are the most expensive is not because of the printer itself but the ink cartridge even if you refill the cartridge could make you headache as the ink doesn't flow as good as the original. The sponge is special and it only store the original ink evenly if you buy a brand new one and it having difficult to absorb new ink when refilling it. That's the reason why HP printer is not the best printer for any CISS. See here the sponge cartridge problem Sponge cartridge ink

I'm a home user with very little usage requirements. Normally, 2~3 prints/month and sometimes, not a single for say 2 months. But, occasionally, I'd print a whole 500 pages book.

Yes Canon E560 looks good for CISS and having factory installed CISS is way better than doing it yourself. The reason perhaps they have calculated the length, tube size, and also the ink flow mechanism...my EPSON till now still working as it used to be although i have not been printing for a couple of months...it the tube from the ink reservoir to the cartridge is not clogging despite of hot/cold weathers.

I perfectly installed the system though, I have to struggle to get quality prints. I have to clear print head or Align Printer several times but finally I get an inferior print.

I guess because the cartridge holder with ink tanks (Head) moves when it prints so it discontinues the ink supply from tanks.

Also I personally think that normal cartridges do not read the level of the ink in the tank but do count the number of copies printed and send it to the company via some software we install at the setup. If not, once we refilled the cartridge, we should not get the message as "Cartridge is not genuine or blah blah...." 1. If there is this printer in the UK i would highly recommend it http://howtodosteps.blogspot.my/2013/11/epson-l200-ciss-printer-continuous-ink.html

I been using for a couple of years and its still running good. The CISS is already pre-customed made and it works great beside the EPSON ink is also far superior than canon

    1. Board paper is too thick for a home use printer and in my knowledge so far there are no manufacturer that make such printer for home use...only for commercial or industrial printing...

But you can use a trick to print on a sticker paper and stick the printed sticker on your board paper

  48. is it true, that if the ciss of a printer is built in, once one of the ink is empty, it will not print at all? while the installed ciss, it would still use the available ink and will continue printing?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's not true ...whether it is installed or built in its the same thing...the concept is simple

There is ink cartridge which print the ink and there is also ink tank reservoir where the ink is store...the tank reservoir consist of all the colors of ink and each tank capacity is 100ml -- so as the ink tank reservoir finish you will need to fill it...but of course with 100ml each it will last very very long time...you can print ten of thousands normal documents and maybe thousand of photo 4R size

    1. The body built of Pixma MG2470 is quite compact i am afraid it would be tough for CISS. You need a printer that has spacious internal structure where the catridge move freely...so that you can easily installed the host between the ink trank reservoir to the printing cartridge

  50. I think Canon printers will work fine with CISS Kit.
Each CISS has the following components:
    1. Multichannel cable or tube that transfers ink from the ink vessels to the OEM print heads.
    2. Ink vessels or tanks (one for each ink color).
    3. Modified OEM ink cartridges.
    4. IC chips that defeat the OEM cartridge detection system (dependent on the make and model of the printer).

    1. Equally looks good for CISS. I am currently using EPSON and the printing quality quite good perhaps due to the ink...but the only little issue with EPSON is the reset issue.. there is time you need to reset and it requires to use software...I guess the Canon doesn't need chip reset so it's slightly a little convenience...but i am not sure of the printing quality of the Canon G1000 ink

However in order to use A3 paper you maybe need larger EPSON printer with CISS...try to look for China, Malaysia, Thailand or vietnam online usually they sell the factory customized EPSON printer

  55. Hi! desperately needed some help here. I have just recently modified my canon MX320 printer into CIS system. Now, it is showing ink level is low in the cartridge and stop printing. I can still continue to print by clicking button to ignore the warning. Is it okay to continue doing so? will it spoilt the original cartridge head. any possible remedy for this issue?

really needed some help. Thank you in advance T.T

    1. It should be fine because the ink only comes in from CISS tank reservoir when you print that's why it is always showing low level....I never encounter such problem before but you may try the method instructed in this blog http://smallbusiness.chron.com/override-printer-ink-levels-64698.html

    1. In term of printing quality EPSON always superior than the rest and also EPSON cartridge are easier to refill...but in term of technical simplicity canon usually better because EPSON requires resetter software when the ink is finished or refill whereas the cannon just fill in...

But personally i would rather choose epson because of its printing superiority

      Delete
    2. Dear Time Keeper,

Can you, please, explain why do you consider that the printing quality of Epsons is always superior to the others? Is there a technical explanation or it is only a personal choice and are you referring only to the standard inks or any type of ink? I am not asking this on behalf of Canon:), but I was thinking that their standard CISS ink (recommended for G1400...3400 models) shall have at least the same quality as the standard CISS ink of Epson (recommended for models up to L800) and may be even comparable to the superior CISS ink of Epson (recommended for L800...850 models).

By the way, if the Epson ink would be better, can the difference be compensated, in some way or to some extent, by the smaller drop size of Canon (2 vs. 3)? If yes, can the smaller drop size compensate, by combinations, the usage of the 2 additional colors on Epson L800...850 models? Of course, the best way to have such a comparative analysis would be to see the same photo printed with, let's say, L486, G2400 and L850, but I doubt that somebody did it.

      Thank you in advance!

    3. To clear your doubt its actually personal preference based on experience. I have nothing to argue about it's just that experience tells me so. If Canon has improved so i am maybe wrong these days - but i still epson in used and no intend to change at this point. Anyway thanks for the comment

  64. Good day sir,

I have here Epson T13 with CISS installed. I usually print several PDF. file and set to Booklet type as it's out put.
My problem is that when i print another PDF.file with Booklet setting, while printing, it will suddenly stop because i have to reset. So i start again from the first page. Waste of band paper, ink and time.

So my question is, does built-in CISS of Epson Printers today stops during printing if it's need to reset? is it the same with CISS Canon Printers? Need your help.,. thanks a lot... Godbless

  65. I want to buy Canon PIXMA MG3670. I saw video on youtube about how to install CISS on that printer but I am little skeptical about its performnce. I just wanted to know that is there any counting mechanism built in the cartridges to prevent them from working after printing fixed number of pages?
Also should I go with CISS installed on that printer as I am looking for a printer for home use and don't want to spend much in this

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Do you meant to reset the ink level after the ink is finished used? Canon doesn't have this counting mechanism but EPSON does. It's better to buy CISS installed rather than doing it yourself because the process can be frustrating especially connecting the pipe joint to the cartridge...most often you have to do a lot of trial and error to ensure the ink flow is working as expected and it can be a lot of work to do

  67. I just bought canon e470 . Can I install ciss on it without much hassles and use it trouble free.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes it looks possible but i cannot guarantee it will be trouble free. Because installing CISS is not as easy as you may think...few basic thing you need to consider..

      1. The interior compartment where the cartridge swing back and forth is spacious enough to install the host pipe from the ink reservoir

      2. The cartridge - you need to modified so that you can connect the host pipe from the ink tank reservoir. The sponge inside the cartridge can be troublesome sometimes because the absorption is not as good as manufactured brand new ink.

However you could try it - never try you never know.

  68. I have Canon Pixma E400 and I ordered CISS Kit for it but I am skeptical about that will it work or provide as good quality prints as original Canon cartridges?

    Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To say its going to provide good quality as original no...but save money printing yes...Instead of canon EPSON is the better choice for quality CISS printing...EPSON L210 or L100 is good enough...i have printed thousands of photos using it ....although the quality is maybe not as good as epson original and far superior than Canon CISS ...because the ink is manufactured by epson...secondly the ink quality is closed to the original of canon ink..

CISS ink for canon is made by china and they add a lot of water to make more profits but it make the ink less viscous and more liquid as a result it smudges because of less viscous
